Meanwhile, expressway earnings saw a significant rise on the day prior to Christmas, with revenue increasing by 25 percent. The Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development stated that Rs. 61 million was generated on December 24.
Sri Lanka’s expressways recorded a revenue of Rs. 54 million on Christmas Day (December 25), with approximately 146,000 vehicles using the network, according to the Road Development Authority (RDA).
Under normal conditions, the country’s expressways earn an average daily revenue of around Rs. 45 million, while about 145,000 vehicles use the expressway system each day.
Authorities attribute the increased revenue and traffic volumes to heightened travel during the festive season, as thousands of commuters and holidaymakers made use of the expressway network to reach their destinations.
