The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) says a programme has been launched to reactivate tsunami early warning towers that are currently non-operational across the country.

Director General of the DMC, Retired Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda, stated that assistance from India will also be obtained for this initiative.

Following the devastating tsunami in 2004, a total of 77 tsunami warning towers were installed along coastal areas of Sri Lanka to alert the public in the event of a similar disaster. However, a number of these towers are presently inactive.

The DMC noted that the reactivation programme aims to strengthen the country’s disaster preparedness and ensure timely warnings to coastal communities in the event of future tsunami threats.
