According to CIABOC, the arrest followed a complaint lodged by a businessman from the Dandugama area in Ja-Ela. The suspect police officer is accused of demanding a bribe of Rs. 300,000 along with three-quarter gold sovereigns in exchange for refraining from taking legal action and failing to produce the complainant before court in connection with a case involving allegedly stolen gold jewellery.
Investigations have revealed that the officer had already accepted Rs. 250,000 as part of the alleged bribe.
The suspect was arrested at around 3.10 p.m. on Wednesday (December 25) near Takshila Maha Vidyalaya in Gampaha by CIABOC officials.
CIABOC said the arrested officer is due to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
