The reopening has taken place as part of an urgent programme implemented by the Department of National Botanic Gardens, following instructions from the Ministry of Environment. The decision was made in accordance with recommendations issued by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
Access to certain areas within the garden where potential hazards have been identified has been temporarily restricted to ensure the safety of visitors. Meanwhile, the garden staff have organised a special programme to facilitate and assist visitors during this period.
Recently, Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody also visited the Hakgala Botanical Garden to inspect the premises and review ongoing activities. During the visit, officials were instructed to take both short-term and long-term measures to stabilise the land, with particular attention given to landslide risks.
Authorities emphasize that visitor safety remains a priority while efforts continue to maintain the garden under prevailing environmental conditions.
