The Department of Motor Traffic has extended the facility to issue temporary driving licences based on foreign driving licences to Sri Lankan citizens and Sri Lankans with dual citizenship through its office at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake.
Earlier, this service was mainly provided to foreign nationals, while Sri Lankans had to obtain temporary driving licences through the Department’s Werahera office, which has been offering the facility for several years.
The Department of Motor Traffic office at BIA commenced operations on August 3, 2025, to facilitate the issuance of temporary driving licences at the airport premises. With the expansion of services, eligible Sri Lankan citizens holding valid foreign driving licences can now access the facility at both the BIA office and the Werahera office.
The service is provided subject to the payment of fees prescribed under the Motor Vehicle (Driving Licence) Fee Regulations, as amended by Government Gazette Extraordinary No. 2463/04 dated November 17, 2025.
Authorities said steps will be taken to extend this facility to district offices in the future to improve accessibility for the public.
