Speaking at a meeting with residents of Hulhumalé Phase I, the Maldivian president said rules already prohibit students below Grade 10 from using mobile phones at school, but the measures have not been properly implemented. Atoll Times reported.
He said the lack of enforcement has led to increased mobile phone use by students during school hours.
Under the revised measures, students below Grade 10 will not be allowed to carry mobile phones to school. Students in Grades 11 and 12 will be permitted to bring phones to school but will not be allowed to use them during classes. The president said the Education Ministry is working on introducing a locker system for students in Grades 11 and 12. Under the system, mobile phones will be stored in lockers during class hours.
“Phones will be kept in lockers during lessons and will not be used during classes,” he said.
The announcement follows a recent incident at Addu High School, where a dispute occurred between a teacher and a student after the teacher attempted to stop the student from playing a video in class. Both the teacher and the student were subsequently suspended.
