Floodwaters that inundated the historic Somawathiya Sacred Temple for the second time are now gradually receding, according to our correspondent.

Although water levels within the premises of the Somawathiya Chaitya Rajayan Vahanse have subsided, surrounding areas of the shrine remain partially flooded, with water continuing to drain slowly.

However, access to the sacred site remains restricted as the Sungavil–Somawathiya road, the main route leading to the temple, is still submerged due to flooding. As a result, the road has not yet been reopened for vehicular movement.

A resident Buddhist monk stated that once the floodwaters completely recede, purification and cleaning activities will be carried out in the monks’ quarters and other buildings within the temple premises.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as conditions gradually return to normal.
