The sluice gates of the Ulhitiya–Ratkinda Mahaweli Reservoir in Girandurukotte, Badulla District, have been opened following a rapid rise in water levels due to heavy rainfall.
All seven sluice gates have been opened by one metre each, releasing water at a discharge rate of 223 cubic metres per second. The released water is being diverted into the Ulhitiya Oya.
As a result, the bridge and roadway over the Ulhitiya Oya along the Ratkinda–Hobariya road have been submerged, causing a complete disruption to vehicular movement in the area.
The resident technical officer of the reservoir has urged residents living along both banks of the Ulhitiya Oya to remain vigilant and advised the public to use alternative routes instead of the Ratkinda–Hobariya road until conditions improve.
