Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) Customs officers intercepted a 58-year-old Sri Lankan businessman attempting to smuggle a large consignment of foreign-made cigarettes through the Green Channel early this morning.
The suspect, a resident of Divulapitiya, had arrived from Dubai on Fitz Air flight 8D-822 at 12.50 a.m. Upon inspection, officers seized 95 cartons containing 19,000 cigarettes, which were being carried without declaration.
Authorities have confirmed that further investigations are underway to determine the full scope of the smuggling attempt.
