The Nawalapitiya–Kandy main road was reopened to the public today (15) following emergency restoration work after Cyclone Ditwa caused severe damage and landslides along the route, the Road Development Authority (RDA) said.
Officials said the road had remained closed for more than two weeks while crews cleared large volumes of earth and debris that had blocked traffic. Due to the continued risk of landslides from surrounding slopes, the RDA has implemented interim safety arrangements to keep the road operational until permanent stabilisation work can be carried out.
Motorists have been advised to travel with caution, particularly in vulnerable sections, while restrictions remain in place on the movement of heavy vehicles to minimise risk.
Addressing the media after the reopening, Member of Parliament Thushari Jayasinghe said restoration work on roads damaged by the cyclone in the Pasbhage Korala area was nearing completion.
She added that repairs to the Ulapane–Kandy road are progressing and that the route is expected to be reopened to traffic within the next week.
