Police have requested medical reports for the drivers involved in the accident of former Speaker and MP Ashoka Ranwala to determine whether alcohol was a factor.
The Sapugaskanda Police have launched an investigation into a road collision that occurred last night, in which a jeep driven by Ranwala collided head-on with another vehicle.
Police Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wootler told a media briefing that two people injured in the accident, including the former Speaker, are receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital, while a six-month-old baby is being treated at the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital.
He said that the medical report will help ascertain whether the drivers were under the influence of alcohol, and that police action will be taken based on the findings.
ASP Wootler added that attempts to obtain a statement from MP Ranwala yesterday were unsuccessful, as he was still undergoing treatment at the National Hospital. The report is expected to be available by this afternoon.
