Out of the 256 roads affected by the recent disaster situation, 192 have already been restored for vehicular traffic, according to Road Development Authority (RDA) Director General Wimal Kandambi.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department today (06), he said that several of these routes have been reopened using temporary measures to ensure immediate connectivity.

Kandambi noted that all remaining damaged roads are expected to be reopened by next week, though roads in the Central Province pose the greatest challenge due to unstable ground conditions. While more than 95% of roads in other provinces are already open, some routes in the Central Province require clearance and approval from the National Building Research Organization. Discussions are underway to monitor and safely reopen these roads.

He added that the RDA has ensured at least one accessible road to reach every major town, easing travel and transportation demands.

Commenting on a key route, the Director General said the Colombo–Kandy road is expected to reopen for 24-hour traffic in the coming days. Currently, the road is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., while landslide-affected sections are cleared at night. Rock-blasting and debris removal will continue for a few more days before full-time access is granted.

Kandambi assured that the RDA is working around the clock to restore complete road connectivity across the country.
