Sri Lanka has formally requested USD 200 million in emergency financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under its Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI), IMF Mission Chief for Sri Lanka Evan Papageorgiou said.

He noted that the request is currently under review and will require approval from the IMF Executive Board before any funds can be released. The RFI is designed to provide swift financial support to countries experiencing sudden balance-of-payments pressures caused by external shocks, natural disasters, or other emergencies.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, addressing Parliament today, also confirmed the government’s appeal for RFI assistance. He said the nation is facing unprecedented financial strain following Cyclone Ditwah, including severe infrastructure damage and escalating costs tied to ongoing relief and reconstruction efforts.
