The annual Sri Pada pilgrimage season is set to commence tomorrow (04), coinciding with the Unduvap Full Moon Poya Day.
This morning (03), a traditional procession carrying sacred relics, the statue of deity Saman, and other religious artifacts began its journey from the Pelmadulla Galpoththawela Raja Maha Viharaya.
The procession will proceed towards the Sri Pada Sacred Grounds via four main routes: Ratnapura–Sri Palabaddala, Ratnapura–Avissawella–Hatton, Ratnapura–Kuruwita–Erathna, and Balangoda.
In addition, another procession is traveling along the Ratnapura–Avissawella–Hatton route, while separate processions will move through Balangoda, Maratenna, and Bagawantalawa. These are held to ceremonially carry the sacred objects, including the statue of deity Saman, perform Buddha Pooja rituals, and formally inaugurate the pilgrimage season.
Chief Incumbent of the Sri Pada Sanctuary, Ven. Bengamuwe Dhammadinna Thera, stated that all religious observances and rituals required for the opening of this year’s Sri Pada pilgrimage season are being conducted accordingly.
The Sri Pada pilgrimage season is scheduled to conclude on the Poson Full Moon Poya Day in the middle of next year.
