Issuing a special statement, the Thera clarified that during periods of heavy rainfall each year, certain plants growing on the mountain slope below the Sri Pada summit naturally collapse and fall. He emphasized that this is a normal natural occurrence and not a landslide affecting the sacred site.
According to the Chief Incumbent, yesterday’s incident occurred along the Ratnapura access route, and it has not caused any impact on the Sri Pada summit or the sacred site.
Hatton Division Senior Police Superintendent Pradeep Weerasekara also confirmed that due to the prevailing heavy rains, a collection of plants mixed with soil had fallen onto the Idikatu Pahana path — the route that connects the Hatton and Ratnapura trails. He added that steps were taken promptly to clear the fallen vegetation.
