An earthslip reported early this morning in the Gangoda area of Kandy has resulted in the recovery of three bodies, while at least 17 individuals have been reported missing, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) confirmed.

Emergency teams, including the Police, Army, and local rescue units, have been deployed to the site as rescue and search operations continue under challenging conditions due to ongoing adverse weather.

According to officials, several homes in the area were affected, and the risk of further earthslips remains high. Residents in vulnerable zones have been urged to move to safer locations and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

The DMC stated that continuous rainfall over the past several days has increased landslide risks across multiple districts, and the public is advised to stay alert to warnings issued by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO).

Rescue efforts are ongoing. Authorities say the number of missing persons may be updated as operations progress.
