The Railway Department has announced a partial shutdown of train services on the Upcountry Railway line amid growing safety risks caused by persistent heavy rainfall.
Continuous downpours have triggered landslides, rockfalls and fallen trees along key stretches of the track beyond Nanu Oya, prompting authorities to halt all services heading towards Badulla. As a result, trains departing Colombo will terminate at Nanu Oya until conditions improve.
Railway officials said the decision was made to prioritise passenger safety, noting that ground inspections revealed unstable slopes and debris across several points of the line. The measures will take effect tomorrow (27), with no timeline yet provided for the full restoration of services.
Passengers have been urged to expect delays, consider alternative travel options and stay alert to further announcements as weather conditions evolve.
