The Irrigation Department has issued an urgent warning that the flood situation in the lower valley areas of the Deduru Oya Basin is likely to escalate to a major flood level, following continuous heavy rainfall recorded in the upper and middle catchment areas over the past 24 hours.

According to officials, the Deduru Oya Reservoir is currently releasing water through its spill gates at an approximate rate of 33,000 cubic feet per second, significantly increasing water levels downstream.

Gauging station observations indicate that several Divisional Secretariat areas are at critical risk, including Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa, and Rasnayakapura.

The earlier flood warning (Ref: DI/Hydro/103(V)), issued through Flood Warning Bulletin No. 03 at 9:00 PM on 26 November 2025, has now been extended for an additional 48 hours due to worsening conditions.

Residents in the affected areas, as well as motorists traveling through vulnerable routes, are urged to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant. Disaster management authorities have been requested to take all necessary preparedness and response measures immediately.
