The Department of Meteorology warns that the low-pressure area located to the southeast of Sri Lanka is likely to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours, moving north-northwestward.

According to the latest advisory the influence of this weather system is expected to bring widespread heavy rainfall and strong winds across the island over the coming days.

The department states that very heavy showers exceeding 150 mm may occur in some areas of the Northern, North Central, Eastern, Central, and Uva Provinces. Meanwhile, several other parts of the country may experience heavy rain of more than 100 mm.

Wind speeds of 50–60 km/h at times are also expected in many areas as the system continues to affect the island.

Residents, especially those in vulnerable regions, are urged to stay alert for further warnings and take necessary precautions.
