Polonnaruwa District is experiencing heavy rainfall, which has caused the Mahaweli River to overflow. As a result, the Somawathiya–Sungavila main road has been closed from 4:00 PM today (26th) by the Polonnaruwa District Disaster Management Unit.

The affected section, between kilometers 35–37 in Diggala, is currently submerged under approximately 2 feet of water. Earlier this morning, the Pulastipura Police had temporarily suspended traffic for light vehicles due to minor flooding on the road. However, rising water levels in the evening forced authorities to halt all vehicular movement on the route.

Authorities are urging devotees planning to visit the historic Somawathiya sacred site to postpone their visits for the next few days. Residents living along the Mahaweli River are also advised to remain alert and exercise caution amid the ongoing flood situation.
