Authorities have issued a strong warning advising fishermen and naval operations around the island to remain suspended until further notice due to the possibility of extremely rough sea conditions.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has requested all fishing vessels currently at sea to return to shore or move to safer locations immediately.

According to the Department of Meteorology, several parts of the country are expected to receive very heavy rainfall exceeding 150 mm today (26). Strong winds are also likely to accompany the heavy showers, increasing the risk of adverse weather conditions.

The low-pressure area that was present over the southwest Bay of Bengal has moved closer to the southern region of Sri Lanka as of midnight yesterday (27). It is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 30 hours, the Meteorology Department said.

As a result, many areas across the island will experience cloudy skies with intermittent showers or thundershowers. Very heavy rainfall exceeding 150 mm is likely in parts of the Eastern, Central, and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa District. Some other areas may experience heavy rainfall over 100 mm.

Additionally, strong winds of around 50 km/h are expected at times in the Northern, North Central, North Western, Western, and Eastern Provinces, as well as in the Hambantota and Matale Districts. Other regions may also experience winds up to 40 km/h at intervals.

The public, especially those in vulnerable areas, are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated with the latest weather information issued by authorities.
