A generous donation from the All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF) is set to strengthen programmes supporting women and children in Sri Lanka. Valued at 1,000,000 RMB (around Rs. 43 million), the contribution includes equipment for a mother-and-baby room, a childcare centre for children of Parliament staff, and women’s hygiene products to be distributed through the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus.

The handover ceremony was held yesterday (25) at the Parliament of Sri Lanka, attended by Hon. Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, Hon. Minister of Women and Child Affairs and Chairperson of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus Mrs. Saroja Savithri Paulraj, and H.E. Qi Zhenhong, Ambassador of China to Sri Lanka.

Hon. Speaker Dr. Wickramaratne highlighted that the donation reflects the deep friendship between Sri Lanka and China and reaffirmed the shared commitment to improving the wellbeing of women and children. Mrs. Paulraj said the materials will directly support ongoing initiatives to uplift vulnerable women and children across the country.

Ambassador Qi emphasized China’s long-standing cooperation with Sri Lanka and reiterated the country’s commitment to backing women’s empowerment and child welfare programmes.

This contribution follows high-level discussions between the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus and ACWF in 2023 and 2024, where China pledged continued support, including assistance for school uniforms and other future projects.

Several senior parliamentary officials were also present at the event, underscoring the collaborative effort to enhance social welfare initiatives.
