The low-pressure area currently positioned over the southwest Bay of Bengal, south of Sri Lanka, was located in its latest position around 5.30 p.m. today, according to the Department of Meteorology. The system is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 30 hours.

Enhanced Rainy and Windy Conditions Expected

With the influence of this developing system, rainy and windy conditions across the island are forecast to strengthen over the coming days.

Very heavy rainfall of around 150 mm is likely in parts of the Eastern, Central, and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa District.

Heavy showers exceeding 100 mm are possible in several other areas of the country.

Strong Winds to Persist

Strong winds of around 50 kmph can be expected at times in the Northern, North-central, North-western, and Eastern Provinces, and in the Hambantota and Matale districts.

Other parts of the island may experience fairly strong winds of about 40 kmph.

Public Urged to Take Precautions

Authorities urge the public to take necessary safety measures to minimize damage from strong winds and lightning associated with the adverse weather conditions.
