Former Chairman of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), A.M.M. Hilmi, was today ordered to be remanded until December 9 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama.

Hilmi is accused of irregularities in a January 2024 procurement process to select an institution for an overseas training programme for SLBFE officers. He allegedly ensured the tender was unlawfully awarded to JSF Holding, resulting in the release of Rs. 5.3 million in state funds, of which Rs. 4.3 million was purportedly arranged to be misappropriated by the first suspect, G.H.D. Shan Yahathpath.

Both Hilmi and Yahathpath face charges of conspiracy and aiding and abetting under the Offences Against Public Property Act for facilitating the misappropriation of government funds.
