The Kala Wewa Reservoir Engineering Office announced that two emergency spill gates of the reservoir were opened by one foot each yesterday (24) evening, following continuous heavy rainfall in the area.

According to engineers, the total water capacity of the Kala Wewa currently stands at 84,222 acre-feet, while an inflow of approximately 3,728 cubic feet per second is being added to the reservoir due to ongoing rainfall. As a result, the engineers opened two spill gates at around 4:00 p.m. yesterday (24), releasing nearly 1,021 cubic feet of water per second into the Kala Oya.

The reservoir received 15 mm of rainfall over the last 24 hours ending this morning (25), the Engineering Office added.

Authorities further cautioned residents living in low-lying areas along both sides of the Kala Oya to remain alert. If necessary, additional spill gate openings may take place during the night to minimize potential disaster risks, and residents are urged to stay prepared.

Meanwhile, due to the prevailing rainy conditions, six spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir have also been opened by four feet each, releasing about 16,000 cubic feet of water per second into the Deduru Oya, according to the Regional Irrigation Engineering Office.
