The Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ) will officially launch a new Score-Based Impact Assessment Tool for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) on Friday (28), marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s environmental evaluation process.
The EIA system, introduced in 1983, is one of the earliest frameworks of its kind in the region. However, despite four decades of implementation, only limited updates have been made, resulting in several gaps that have gradually weakened public trust in the process.
To enhance transparency and improve stakeholder engagement, CEJ has developed a structured, score-based tool designed to better identify and evaluate the critical impacts of development projects on the physical, biological, and social environment. The tool was created in collaboration with a panel of recognized experts in the EIA field.
A stakeholder consultation held on July 3, 2024, helped refine the tool further. Following the feedback, CEJ and the expert panel finalized the system into a more user-friendly and effective format.
