Sri Lanka’s Parliament was illuminated in orange on November 24 in solidarity with the global “16 Days of Activism” campaign aimed at ending gender-based violence.

This year’s theme, “Let’s unite to end digital violence against all women and girls,” underscores the rising threat of online harassment and abuse. The event, organized by the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus with the support of UNFPA, saw Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff wearing orange attire and receiving symbolic badges to mark their commitment.

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya highlighted that combating gender-based violence requires collective responsibility from society—not legislation alone. She emphasized the need for stronger community-driven efforts to protect women and girls, especially in digital spaces.

Minister of Women and Child Affairs Saroja Savithri Paulraj announced that proposals will be made to amend the Standing Orders of Parliament to curb and prevent harassment of women MPs within the chamber, strengthening internal safeguards.
