The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has called on the government to provide a specific, time-bound plan to address ongoing challenges faced by doctors and the health sector, warning that a failure to do so within 48 hours could lead to tougher professional measures.
At an emergency executive council meeting held today, the GMOA stressed that while the government has proposed solutions, the absence of a clear schedule has left the future of Sri Lanka’s free health service uncertain.
The association noted that it had submitted detailed proposals to the President and other authorities before the budget was presented, but these were largely ignored, contributing to the current crisis.
Although some professional actions have been taken, the GMOA emphasized that no hospital strikes have been announced so far. The association continues to push for a concrete plan with deadlines to protect doctors and improve the health system.
During the recent Health Ministry Budget Committee debate, MPs acknowledged the difficulties faced by doctors, but the lack of a defined timeline for implementing solutions has heightened concerns.
The GMOA urged the President, Health Minister, and relevant authorities to immediately provide a clear and actionable plan to address the critical issues in the country’s health sector.
