A new digital payment system for Sri Lanka’s public transport sector was officially launched today (24) by the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, as part of the country’s broader initiative to introduce modern digital solutions nationwide.
No Additional Charges for Bus Commuters Paying via Electronic Cards Transport, Highways & Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayakeer says the programme, commuters can now pay bus fares using electronic cards, ensuring greater convenience, transparency, and efficiency across the transportation network.
The initiative has been implemented with the guidance of the Ministry of Digital Economy and aims to strengthen existing public transport services while promoting a more reliable and accountable fare collection process between passengers and bus operators.
The launch event took place at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre, under the patronage of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake. Addressing the gathering, the Minister emphasized that passengers using electronic cards will not incur any additional charges.
The system is expected to significantly enhance commuter convenience and support the government’s push toward a more digitally empowered public service sector.
