Reservoir engineers have reported that heavy afternoon rains in the catchment areas on the western slopes of the central hills have raised water levels in the Castlereagh and Maussakelle reservoirs close to overflow levels.

The Castlereagh reservoir is now 9 feet below overflow, while Maussakelle is 15 feet below. The increase in water levels has enabled the Wimalasurendra, Laxapana, New Laxapana, Canyon, and Polpitiya hydropower stations to operate at maximum capacity.

Engineers also noted that the water capacity of Hatton Devon and Saint Clair waterfalls has risen due to the ongoing rainfall.
