The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau says it is aware of several foreign tourists posting social media videos that harm the country’s reputation.

Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam said the Bureau has already notified social media platforms about one foreign tourist involved in such behaviour. A complaint was lodged after a video showing an argument between a foreign tourist and a local person in the Weligama beach area — during a snake-charming activity — was circulated online. Steps were taken to have the video removed.

The Bureau has also taken note of a recently shared video involving the alleged sexual harassment of a foreign woman.

Chairman Hewawasam said necessary legal action will be taken in the future against foreign tourists who act in ways that negatively affect Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.
