The Department of Meteorology warns that the low-level atmospheric disturbance currently situated near Sri Lanka is likely to develop into a low-pressure system by tomorrow (25). As a result, widespread rainfall and cloudy skies are expected to persist across the island over the next few days.
According to the forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, and Eastern provinces, while the rest of the island can expect rainfall after 1:00 p.m.
The department further cautions that heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in parts of the Northern and Eastern provinces. Fairly heavy showers of over 75 mm could also occur in several other areas.
Residents are urged to take precautions against localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
Weather Advisory for Sea Areas
A low-pressure area has formed over the South Andaman Sea and is expected to move west-northwestward, intensifying into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal later today (24).
The Met Department advises naval and fishing communities to remain alert to upcoming forecasts and bulletins.
Rainfall:
Showers or thundershowers are expected in several sea areas surrounding the island.
Winds:
North-easterly or variable winds will prevail at speeds of 25–35 kmph, with gusts increasing to 50–55 kmph at times from Trincomalee to Chilaw via Kankasanthurai and Mannar.
Sea Condition:
These same sea areas may become fairly rough at times, while others will range from slight to moderate.
Very rough seas are expected temporarily during thundershowers due to strong gusty winds.
