According to the statement, the water level of the Deduru Oya is currently close to flood level due to heavy rainfall received in the catchment area. The spill gates of the Deduru Oya reservoir have been opened, releasing water at a rate of 19,400 cubic feet per second, with the possibility of further increases depending on incoming inflow to the reservoir.
As a result, the Department of Irrigation warns that flooding may occur in low-lying areas of the Walpola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa, and Rasnayakapura Divisional Secretariats.
Meanwhile, the Attanagalu Oya basin has also received considerable rainfall over the past several hours. Based on water-level analysis of the monitoring stations maintained by the Department of Irrigation, low-lying areas in the Divisional Secretariats of Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Attanagalla, Mahara, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, Ja-Ela, Katana, and Wattala may experience flooding within the next 24 hours.
The Department cautions that some roads in flood-prone zones may become submerged and urges residents and motorists traveling through these areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
