Passengers will be able to pay their bus fares using bank cards starting tomorrow (24), marking a major step towards a cashless public transport system in Sri Lanka.
The initiative, implemented by the Ministry of Transport and Highways under the technical guidance of the Ministry of Digital Economy, is set to be officially launched at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre.
According to the Ministry of Digital Economy, the first phase of the programme will cover approximately 20 bus routes. Officials say the system aims to modernize public transport, reduce cash handling, and improve convenience for daily commuters.
