Train operations on the coastal railway line have been restricted to Weligama after a slow train travelling from Matara to Colombo Maradana derailed yesterday at around 2.05 p.m. between the Kamburugamuwa and Weligama stations.
Railway authorities said that although staff managed to restore services shortly after the initial derailment, the train derailed again at the same spot, prompting a further suspension of operations beyond Weligama.
Rehabilitation work is currently in progress, and officials stated that train services on the coastal route will run only between Colombo and Weligama until the damaged section is repaired and declared safe.
