Following significant rainfall in the upstream and middle-reach areas of the Nilwala River and Gin Ganga basins today, authorities have urged heightened alertness as low-lying regions may experience minor flooding.

In the Nilwala River valley, areas including Pasgoda, Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, and Thihagoda D.S. Divisions could face rising waters within the next 24 hours, according to hydrological assessments. Residents and drivers in these zones are advised to take precautions, while disaster management teams are coordinating preventive measures.

The Gin Ganga Basin also recorded substantial rainfall by 9.00 PM, with potential flooding expected in Neluwa, Thawalama, Nagoda, Niyagama, Welivitiya-Divithura, Elpitiya, and Akmeemana D.S. Divisions over the next 14 hours. Authorities have called on communities and commuters to remain cautious and adhere to safety guidelines.

The Irrigation Department emphasized continuous monitoring of river levels and close coordination with local disaster management units to minimize risks to life and property.
