The Matara Magistrate’s Court was informed on Friday that former Minister Basil Rajapaksa had booked and later cancelled airline tickets to travel to Sri Lanka, despite submitting medical reports claiming he was unfit for air travel.
Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama told court that there was serious suspicion Rajapaksa was deliberately avoiding court appearances, highlighting inconsistencies in the medical documents submitted on his behalf.
The case concerns allegations that Rs. 50 million, allegedly obtained through unlawful means, was used to purchase 1.5 acres of land at Browns Hill, Matara. Four individuals, including Rajapaksa, have been indicted.
While the first and second suspects appeared before court, Rajapaksa and the fourth suspect, Ayoma Galappatti, were absent. President’s Counsel Anil Silva, representing Rajapaksa, submitted medical reports stating his client suffers from Left Side Sciatica, rendering him unfit for air travel.
However, DSG Girihagama noted that earlier medical reports had cited a neck injury from a fall, though X-ray results had shown no fractures. She further revealed that although a medical recommendation dated 14 September 2025 advised Rajapaksa to avoid flying for six months, he had reserved airline tickets for travel between November 18 and 21, which were later cancelled.
Court also heard that an airline medical clearance form had indicated Rajapaksa was fit to travel with assistance and did not require special seating or oxygen, deepening concerns over the credibility of the medical claims.
The Magistrate ordered Rajapaksa’s legal team to submit a comprehensive medical report, warning that failure to do so may lead to bail forfeiture. Sureties were also instructed to ensure his appearance.
The case was postponed to May 22, 2026.
