A well-known singer appeared before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today and pleaded guilty to charges of possessing and circulating an obscene video of his wife via social media.
According to court documents, the complainant, married to the singer for over ten years, had faced difficulties in the marriage due to his alcoholism and alleged extramarital relationships. In 2020, she temporarily left their home and moved in with her mother, during which she developed an online relationship with a young man living in Japan. This relationship later became sexual through video calls.
After reconciling with her husband, the complainant resumed living with him. At a later stage, the singer reportedly checked her mobile phone and discovered chats between her and the young man. He then contacted the man, who admitted to secretly recording sexually explicit video calls and disclosed that the husband had obtained the footage.
The husband subsequently forwarded the video to the complainant’s sister and to the complainant herself via WhatsApp, threatening further circulation.
The complainant lodged a complaint with the Computer Crimes Division in December 2023. The division filed charges against the singer under Section 347 of the Penal Code and Sections 2(a) and 2(b) of the Obscene Publications (Amendment) Act No. 22 of 1983.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama noted that the complainant was not present in court and ordered that the case be recalled on December 19.
