The order for a vehicle for the Lanka Electricity Company (LECO) Chairman has been cancelled, and an inquiry has been launched into the matter, Power and Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody told Parliament today.
Responding to allegations by MP Ravi Karunanayake, the Minister said the vehicle had been ordered by LECO officials without the knowledge of former Chairman Janaka Aluthge while he was overseas. He added that Rs. 622 million had originally been allocated from the budget to procure 17 vehicles, including seven cars and ten cabs, but the amount was later reduced to Rs. 466 million. Reports indicate that a Mercedes-Benz worth around Rs. 80 million had been ordered for the LECO Chairman.
