President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the longstanding issues faced by the people of the Northern and Eastern Provinces can no longer be resolved through “outdated political solutions,” reiterating the need for a new Constitution and a modern political framework.
He made these remarks during discussions held on the Provincial Council elections and broader constitutional reforms.
The President highlighted that moving towards a new political structure is essential and underscored the importance of the support of all parties in this process.
The meeting also focused on long-standing regional concerns, including fisheries disputes, land issues, and the need for improved infrastructure and development across the Northern and Eastern Provinces. The President issued immediate directives to relevant officials to implement solutions for several matters raised by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) representatives.
TNA members expressed readiness to extend full cooperation to any government initiative aimed at the development of the Northern Province.
Former MP and Attorney-at-Law M. A. Sumanthiran added that the TNA, as a party representing the Tamil community, is also prepared to support any government decision taken against extremism.
