This move follows the policy approval given at the Cabinet meeting held on 16 June 2025 to abolish the Parliamentary Pensions Act No. 1 of 1971 of the National State Assembly. The decision aligns with the government’s policy statement and its pledge under the national vision, “A Prosperous Country A Beautiful Life,” which promises reforms benefiting all Sri Lankans.
Accordingly, a draft bill has been prepared by the Legal Draftsman to remove the pension entitlements currently granted to elected Members of Parliament and their spouses. The Attorney General has also issued clearance for the draft.
The Cabinet has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Justice and National Integration to publish the bill in the Government Gazette and subsequently submit it to Parliament for approval.
