Continuous heavy rainfall in the Badulla district has caused multiple landslides and rockfalls, blocking roads and damaging property, Badulla District Secretary Panduka Sri Prabath Abeywardena said today (18).

A landslide struck the Kotugahatenna area along the Ella–Passara road, while another blocked the 2nd Kanuwa section of the Koslanda–Poonagala road. The Bandarawela–Liyangahawela–Ambadandegama route has also been affected by a landslide.

In Bandarawela’s Ambadandegama area, a large rock mass collapsed onto the road at night, halting traffic completely. The Chairman of the Bandarawela Pradeshiya Sabha, councillors, and staff worked overnight with a backhoe to clear the debris.

Rising water levels submerged the Haldummulla Kelipanawela Shoe Bridge (Kosuwa) yesterday evening (17). The Disaster Management Center is working to remove debris on both sides of the bridge.

Additionally, a rockfall near Bistle Bend on the Welimada–Keppetipola–Hewanakubura road caused further disruption to traffic.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid affected routes as unstable ground conditions persist.
