The General Opposition has won the election to appoint a new Board of Directors and General Assembly representatives for the Hakmana Various Services Cooperative Society.
The election, held yesterday (16), saw 68 representatives from the General Opposition and 32 from the National People's Force elected, giving the General Opposition control of the cooperative.
Thushara Vidanagama, former Chairman of the cooperative, represented the General Opposition from the Kumbhalgoda constituency, while the Vice Chairman of the Hakmana Pradeshiya Sabha contested from the Hakmana constituency on behalf of the National People's Force.
Although the cooperative has 37 constituencies, only 17 are currently operational. The Hakmana Multi-Service Cooperative Society runs 14 rural bank branches, one Co-op City, four Mini-Co-op Cities, two petrol stations, an Early Childhood Development Centre, a Day Care Centre, and a Coconut Oil Mill.
A total of 100 representatives are elected to the General Assembly, from which seven are chosen for the Board of Directors.
