Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern and Uva Provinces, as well as the Hambantota district. The rest of the island is likely to experience showers or thundershowers after 1.00 p.m.
The Met Department warns that heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm may occur in parts of the Northern and Eastern Provinces, while fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are possible in several other areas.
Misty conditions are also expected in the early morning over Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Southern Provinces.
Authorities urge the public to take necessary precautions to minimize damage from strong localized winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
Rough Seas Expected Around the Island
The weather over sea areas is also forecast to be unstable in the next 24 hours.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the sea areas stretching from Pottuvil to Mannar via Trincomalee and Kankasanthurai, while other coastal waters may experience rain in the afternoon or night.
North-easterly winds will prevail at speeds of 20–30 km/h, increasing up to 45 km/h in the waters off Trincomalee, Kankasanthurai, Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, and Galle.
These areas may become fairly rough at times, with temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas during thundershowers.
Fishermen and naval communities are urged to remain vigilant.
