Sri Lanka Police have intensified monitoring and enforcement efforts following a rise in foreign nationals driving without proper permits, Police Media Spokesperson ASP F. U. Wootler said.
According to him, authorities are encountering a growing number of tourists operating vehicles—particularly three-wheelers—without the legally required documentation. “Tourists driving three-wheelers has now become a noticeable issue. It is completely illegal, and we have already taken strict action against the owners who rent out these vehicles,” he noted.
The police emphasise that all visitors, as well as local travellers, must comply with the Motor Traffic Act when operating any vehicle in the country. Officials say many foreigners have been found driving without valid licences, prompting stronger checks and legal action.
ASP Wootler reiterated that only foreign nationals with a valid International Driving Permit are allowed to drive in Sri Lanka. Those holding domestic licences from their home countries must first obtain an endorsement or certificate from the Department of Motor Traffic before being permitted to drive locally.
