The Lanka Sugar Company has taken a major step toward expanding its market presence by launching its first-ever direct brown sugar sales network, a move that comes as the government announces relief through the exemption of statutory payments starting January 1.

The new sales network, opened in Nugegoda recently is expected to improve consumer access to affordable, locally manufactured brown sugar while enhancing revenue streams for the state-owned company. According to Trade Minister Sunil Handunnetti, the initiative is also poised to strengthen the livelihoods of 250,000 sugarcane-farming families who depend on the industry.

In addition to brown sugar, the Lanka Sugar Company is preparing to diversify its product portfolio with value-added items such as sugarcane-based beverages, jaggery, and sugarcane honey, which will be available through its Nawala Road outlet.

The launch also serves as a strong rebuttal to longstanding rumours that the Pelwatte and Sevanagala factories were facing closure or privatization. Company officials noted that restarting a direct sales operation after 14 years marks a significant milestone, made possible through the commitment of staff and the support of sugarcane farmers.

Operating under the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development, the Lanka Sugar Company says the new retail approach aims to bring quality local products directly to consumers while reinforcing the role of the domestic sugar industry in the national economy.
