Sri Lanka launches information system for Aquaculture industry

The Fisheries, Aquatic Resources and Ocean Resources Ministry, together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA), has launched the Shrimp Industry Information System (SIIS). The initiative was unveiled under the patronage of Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandraseker.

This marks Sri Lanka’s first digital platform dedicated to supporting smart and sustainable aquaculture. The SIIS integrates technologies such as Big Data, IoT, AI, and early warning systems to assist farmers in improving farm management, preventing diseases, and monitoring water quality.

Officials said the system is expected to boost efficiency, enhance productivity, and strengthen long-term sustainability in the country’s shrimp farming sector.
