Estate workers from the Carbex section of the Somerset Estate in Nanuoya, Nuwara Eliya, held a special blessing ceremony at a local Hindu temple on yesterday afternoon (14) to invoke blessings on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the government.

The ceremony was organised in appreciation of the government’s recent decision to increase the workers’ daily basic wage by Rs. 400, raising it from Rs. 1,350 to Rs. 1,750.

Workers who attended the event said the wage increase came after years of labour on the tea estates and numerous struggles, including strikes and trade union campaigns demanding fair pay.

Following the religious rituals, all estate workers present were served milk rice prepared by the temple as part of the ceremony’s offerings.
