Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has stressed the urgent need for professional journalists who understand responsibility and accountability, citing the growing spread of misinformation on digital and social media platforms.

Speaking at the certificate awarding ceremony of the ITN MMC Campus held on November 12 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, the Prime Minister said some individuals now disseminate false information for personal gain, posing serious risks to society.

She said that structured, subject-based media education is essential for the next generation. “Today, misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information are major concerns. Content creators must recognise the impact of what they share,” she said.

Dr. Amarasuriya noted that digital media has become as influential as mainstream journalism, making proper training vital. She commended the ITN MMC Campus for its efforts to produce responsible media professionals and equip youth with essential digital skills.
