Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Ratnayake announced that passengers will be able to pay bus fares using any bank card starting from November 24.

Speaking during the second reading debate of the Appropriation Bill, the Minister said the new system is being introduced as a solution to the long-standing issue of bus conductors being unable to return balance money to passengers after issuing tickets.

He added that the government has already achieved several milestones through its digitalization efforts. Minister Ratnayake further emphasized that billions of rupees are currently being transacted through LankaPay and GovPay platforms, reflecting the country’s growing shift toward digital payments.

The card-based bus fare payment system is expected to enhance convenience, transparency, and efficiency in public transport.
